About This Blog

“New Diaspora. New Dialogue.” is about the positive changes in Greece and in Greek society, and the efforts to achieve these changes.   It is for diaspora Greeks and friends of Greece that want to expand the dialogue on Greece, and have new conversations about areas that interest them:  environment, community engagement, youth activism, renewable energy, innovation.  New conversations lead to new relationships and new ideas.  These lead to new action.

About Me

My name is Aphrodite Bouikidis. I am an early-career professional of Hellenic descent interested in promoting honest, solution-oriented communication and partnerships between Greeks in the diaspora and in Greece.

Growing up, I spent most of my summers in Greece. Then I studied Greece, studied in Greece, and spent several months in Athens for an internship. My life was not all Greece, all the time, however. I studied international relations, with a focus on the Middle East, and then spent a few years at an international development organization that focuses on supporting democratic institutions overseas.

Now, when I visit or think of Greece, I am interested in how women, youth, businesses, non-government organizations, local governments and others are finding innovative ways to make their communities better. I want to understand modern Greek society through the lens of my professional and community experiences, and meet people in Greece that are searching for new ways of connecting with each other, their community and the world around them.

This is my attempt to share my search for the new ideas and efforts of creative, dedicated people in Greece. By hosting stories on what is working in the country, I hope this platform will help us begin a broader dialogue with our friends, family and counterparts in Greece. Working together, we can make it a better place – a place that continues to inspire us with its history, resilience, culture and sunshine.

Working on this blog inspired me to outline five key principles expressing my goals and values as a member of the Greek-American diaspora: My Vision for the Greek American Community.

This is great! I got a discussion topic suggestion, you probably know what it is already. I’d like to shine a light on Greece’s growing movement to combat human trafficking in and through the country. 🙂
